Why does adding RAW support for 4 high-end digital cameras to iPhoto require a system restart?

I’m as big a fan of the RAW format as anyone (ok, actually I have never used the RAW format) but why does adding 4 camera’s RAW profiles to OS X require a system reboot? It just doesn’t seem right…

Because the core functionality of it is across the entire operating system…think of it as OS X itself is getting the update. This provides native support for the camera’s RAW file format in OS X. Then applications like Aperture, iPhoto, etc, can use it.

Kevin, stop offering rational explanations of why it is so. 😛 I personally don’t remember the last RAW update requiring a restart.

  3. Thanks Gussy.

Support for a camera should be a library that gets loaded as needed. I can think of no reason for a Restart.

I would assume the update is not strictly for the processing of RAW files from these cameras, but also for recognizing their unique internal storage parameters and mounting their data on the Mac desktop.

Don’t forget that the wonderful Finder and QuickView load up them images too.

But isn´t that what´s happening since quite a while? I remember when I was still using PCs and everyone told me about the Mac not needing any restarts upon installation. This is long history since nearly all installations now require a reboot. Well… that´s progress, obviously…

  8. Me happy about this. FINALLY I can import RAWs from my 50D straight into Aperture instead of going through Adobe DNG Converter.

    Lesson learnt is this:

    1. If you buy new stuff you’ll probably get stung (duh, OK, I never learn this lesson, at least not permanently)

    2. If I ever hear anyone winging about lacking RAW support they probably have shiny toys that I’d really like to own myself ^_^

IMHO: Well worth the restart 😉

I agree about the restart. I never used to reboot my PowerPC, with uptimes running into months. Try that on a Windows box you use every day. However, ever since moving to the Intel platform, reboots on updates seem to be common. They also lost the battery swap while sleeping, which I used all the time on my old Macbook pro.
