WTF? Palm Pre syncs with iTunes? Let the countdown to the next iTunes update begin!

Faithful Macenstein reader Jimmy Schapira did what I did not have the time (or quite frankly, the interest) in doing today – he actually followed Engadget’s live Palm Pre event at D7. And good thing he did. First, we learned that the Walt Mossberg-hosted event was for some reason hosted in barber chairs.

But secondly, and almost as important, is that apparently through some sort of evil, blasphemous hackery, Palm has found a way to get iTunes to sync music and video from iTunes to the Pre. On a Mac, no less!

As you might expect, the media needs to be DRM-free, but nowadays just about any music you buy from iTunes WILL be DRM-free. Of course, we fully expect an iTunes update citing “bug fixes” to be released soon after the Pre goes on sale, but this is still actually pretty big news. Now, ordinarily I would say that we should all run out and sell our Apple stock, but coincidentally on the day of Palm’s big coming out party comes rumors that Steve Jobs showed up at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters today, doing one-armed pushups with 2 female interns on his back. So I am predicting a 4% jump in AAPL tomorrow despite this iPhone-killing announcement.

Oh Spit why don’t cha! 😉

Which came first, iTunes or the iPod?

What was the first device that could sync with iTunes?

Heck, what is the lowest operating system you could install iTunes on? LOL

not sure if you are serious with your questions, but iTunes came out before the iPod….

officially version 1.0 came out in 2001…

unofficially, a programme called SoundJAM MP came out in 2000 which was the basis of what was to become iTunes….
Basically Apple bought the rights to SoundJAM MP and hired the developers to make it into iTunes.

SoundJAM MP could be run on Mac OS 8 and up, however when iTunes came out it would only run on OS 9 and later OS X.

The iPod two years later came out to the public in ’03.

The lowest OS that iTunes runs on? Wouldn’t that be Windows Vista?

not sure how this is iPhone killing… sales from the iTunes store would still probably continue for the Palm Pre user, most adopters of Palm probably have an iPod or two or three… if the user has bought a Pre then Apple already lost the iPhone sale, I doubt sync ability with iTunes is going to sway someone from iPhone to Palm Pre… it’s the other expanded feature set that’s going to pull from iPhone to Pre

for the record I own both stocks… I doubt Palm will skyrocket like Apple did back in the day, but there’s already an uptick.

    on another note,
WTH is up with the Pre naming convention… Pre what? Pre Palm… Palm Pretty Pricey… Palm Presumptuous… Palm Again, the rise of Palm, before Palm, Palm before… Palm P.R.E.

I see it as a positive thing for Apple. If someone wants a Pre, or if they are locked into a Sprint contract, it means that Apple will be more likely to add this Pre user as an iTunes store customer and possibly sell them a Mac. While I love my iPhone, I would consider switching to a Pre if I found it noticeably better, but that’s not very likely.
