Show OS X you hate it with “Teh Icons”
Adobe’s icon set for its CS3 suite is arguably the worst ever. (Well, really, there is no argument, but some people apparently blindly defend Adobe the way most of us blindly defend Apple). If you happen to be one of those Adobe lovers that thinks the simplicity of their faux periodic table of elements icons set (which in reality wasn’t meant to mimic the periodic table) is somehow conducive to a productive workflow, then take a look at “Teh Icons“. This... Read More
10.5.2 fixes Stacks!
HOORAY! It seems that our daily e-mails to Apple just might have gotten to someone on the Leopard development team! According to a source familiar with the latest Leopard build seeded to developers, in addition to all those meaningless “little” fixes (like Data Detectors, the Mac OS X Dock, the Finder, grammar checking, iCal, iChat, Mail, Parental Controls, Quick Look, Rosetta, Safari, Time Machine, and AirPort), our source tells us that Apple has fixed Stacks by... The Chicken or the Egg?
Faithful Macenstein reader and FileMaker wizard Jon Rosen pointed our radar towards a Gizmodo post we somehow missed, showing the evolution of both the Apple and Windows OS’s throughout the years. We’re not going to say much about this, aside from that Microsoft are a bunch of no good, thieving, dirty, rotten, photocopying, scoundrels! Read More Read More
Is Panther Apple’s most stable OS?
Last night, faithful Macenstein reader TheWarpedOne wrote us asking what to call that gray screen that appears when a Mac running OS X crashes – you know, the one that appears like a descending curtain, telling you in no uncertain terms (and in a half dozen languages) that you’re screwed, and now have to reboot your computer. He called it the Gray Screen of Death, an homage to Window’s Blue Screen of Death, but I knew there had to be an Apple Fanboy term for... Read More
10.5.1 and still no fix for the ATi X1900 MacPro display issues
Time to once again exploit our readers for help on an issue I am having… One of the things I was personally most looking forward to in the 1st Leopard update was a fix for a seemingly widespread display issue affecting MacPro owners, myself included. The two screenshots below show my symptoms (odd tearing lines across windows), which seem to be similar to those experienced by other Mac Pro users, as outlined in the Apple Discussions Forum. Above: Click to embiggen. Above:... Read More
Backing up both Intel and PPC computers to the same Time Machine drive
Faithful Macenstein reader Scott writes: Hey, I just got a 750GB external hard drive with the intention to back up both my iMac and my older iBook G4. I installed Leopard on both to use Time Machine. I plugged in the hard drive to my iMac and have it backing that up. When I went to plug it into my iBook, it said it would erase the hard drive and then start backing up the iBook, which would then, obviously erase everything that I have backed up from my iMac. Have you or any... Read More
Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update
Less than 20 days after releasing Leopard, Apple has put out the first “point” release to the OS, featuring a slew of minor bug fixes and security updates. You can download the 110 MB update via Software Update, or by clicking here. So far it seems like a fairly benign update on our systems, but let us know if anything breaks. 🙂 About the 10.5.1 Update: The following improvements for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs are included in this update AirPort •... Tips/How To: Use Terminal to keep your job
It’s happened to everyone who’s ever slacked off at work (and if you are reading this instead of doing something productive, I’ll assume you fall into that category): The boss asks you do do some simple little job (or maybe even a big one) and you totally space out and forget about it. A week later he walks in and says, “Hey Bonehead, where’s that TPS report? I don’t see it on the server.” Somehow you’re able to mask your panic,... Read More
When is “Actual Size” not Actual Size?: Leopard’s Blurry Preview Pt 2
My earlier post on Leopard’s seemingly soft Preview led many of our faithful readers to question my methodology, and rightly so. At Macenstein, we’ve never been the type to do “quality” experiments, and “good enough is our very best” has long been our motto. However, I decided to devote one last ounce of my precious energy to the blurry Preview issue, and the results of the test actually led to more questions than answers. (Oh, and then to... Read More
Time Machine doesn’t like apostrophes
Faithful Macenstein reader Jon Rosen writes us with a bizarre Time Machine issue he was experiencing. “I’ve been having a bizarre problem with Time Machine. It makes 2 backups in a row every time it does a backup. The second backup is a much smaller one. It took me about 90 minutes to get to the proper person at Apple Tech Support. Apparently, it’s a known issue. It has to do with there being an apostrophe in my computer’s name under Sharing. Apparently,... Read More
