iTunes Store Tops Three Billion Songs

Posted by Dr. Macenstein Apple today announced that more than three billion songs have been purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store, presumably 2 billion of which are from Fergie. “We’d like to thank all of our customers who have contributed to this incredible milestone,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. iTunes features a catalog of more than five million songs, 550 TV shows, and 500 movies, and it recently surpassed both Amazon... Read More

No iPhone AppleCare for AL, CT, NV, or WY residents

Posted by Dr. Macenstein You better not drop your iPhone if you are a Connecticut resident. Or Nevada. Or Alabama or Wyoming for that matter. Faithful Macenstein reader hmmm alerts us that those 4 states have apparently joined together to form the new “AppleCare Axis of Evil“, refusing to allow Apple to offer the new iPhone AppleCare plan to their residents. From the iPhone AppleCare disclaimer: Apple is not authorized to sell the AppleCare Protection Plan for... Read More

Why iPhone users should WANT the iPhone to tank

Posted by Dr. Macenstein During today’s Q3 financial conference call, Jobs and Co. painted a slightly more optimistic picture of iPhone sales than AT&T had alluded to yesterday. While still shy of the 700,000 some demented analysts had predicted, 275,000 was a far cry better then the 146,000 figure AT&T had thrown about and which had sent Apple’s stock tumbling in after hours trading. And while as an Apple stockholder I was happy to see this news (coupled... Read More

iPhone Street Magic

Posted by Dr. Macenstein Faithful Macenstein reader Mark sent us a link to this awesome clip showing “virtual magician” Marco Tempest demonstrating some amazing iPhone features we were unaware of. I’ll have to try some of these out when I get my iPhone back from ColorWare. (Oh, did I mention I am getting my iPhone painted by ColorWare?) 🙂 Perhaps the most impressive thing about this video is it was apparently shot just 30 minutes after Marco bought the iPhone.... Read More

AT&T activated 146,000 iPhone subscribers in the last two days of the quarter

Posted by Dr. Macenstein While we will hopefully get some iPhone sales figures from Apple tomorrow during their Q3 financial conference call, AT&T has provided a glimpse at what we should expect. According to TheStreet, AT&T activated 146,000 iPhone subscribers in the last two days of the quarter. Of course, by “last 2 days of the quarter”, they mean Friday June 29th and Saturday June 30th. Since the iPhone only went on sale at 6PM on June 29th, that means... Read More

PC Magazine predicts when your iPhone will die; Mass hysteria sure to follow

Posted by Dr. Macenstein I’m not sure why, exactly, but people are obsessed with the idea of their iPhone’s battery dying. Somehow, just because you can’t swap it out as easily as a conventional phone’s battery, people feel that in 2 or 3 years, when the rechargeable battery eventually gives up the ghost, you will have to throw your iPhone away. This seems a bit alarmist to me, as someone who has replaced iPod batteries in the past (with minimal hassle... Read More

Review: Belkin’s Acrylic Case for iPhone

Posted by Dr. Macenstein I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m actually a big fan of acrylic cases. In my experience with iPod cases, I find they provide some of the best protection available, as well as the ability to hold up over time. A quick rinse restores the cases to like-new condition (try that with a leather case), and their transparent design allows you to appreciate the “beauty” of your gadget’s design. I suppose I am... Read More

Find Jason Bourne and Win one of 10 iPhones

Posted by Dr. Macenstein And speaking of wanting an iPhone more than a car (see faithful Macenstein reader Mike’s comment), faithful Macenstein reader Michelle tipped us off to a new movie promotion for the upcoming Universal movie The Bourne Ultimatum is promising to give away 10 iPhones (along with such lesser prizes as a VW Touareg 2 and $25,000). To win, you must play The Ultimate Search for Bourne. It’s an online game and sweepstakes that’ll run until... Read More

A BMW; the perfect iPhone accessory

Posted by Dr. Macenstein What better accessory for one of the most expensive mobile phones than one of the most expensive mobile vehicles? (OK, yes, I know all vehicles are (supposed to be) mobile, I was just trying for some literary continuity there.) BMW has announced that all their cars since 2004 (or 2005 depending on the model) should work seamlessly with the iPhone for both iPod playback and hands-free calling. In reality, this announcement isn’t really announcing... Read More

Weird iPhone glitch… TV shows don’t Sync, but Movies do?

Posted by Dr. Macenstein My iPhone has exhibited an odd behavior and I was hoping some fellow geek out there with an iPhone and Elgato’s Eye TV software can verify it for me. Here’s the deal. I have about 250 TV shows in my iTunes library which I have recorded using Elegato’s EyeTV software, and exported using their 640×480 H.264 video iPod setting. I made a playlist in iTunes to sync a couple videos to my iPhone, and I dragged in about 5 of these videos.... Read More
