Why doesn’t the MacBook Air have wireless USB?
Why didn’t the first company to ditch the floppy drive decide to ditch USB cables? Dell’s XPS M1530, Inspiron 1525, 17-inch Inspiron 1720 and 13-inch M1330 all have wireless USB options, so why doesn’t the MacBook Air? It certainly would have played into the Air’s naming and marketing schemes. Sure, the wireless Dells are ugly, but given the lack of expansion ports on the Air, swapping out the USB port for a FireWire one and including wireless USB would... Read More
MacBook air NOT the HD home media server we were all led to believe it was
If you were one of the 1000’s of people who rushed out and bought a new MacBook Air to use a High Def media server for your home entertainment center, we’ve got some bad news. Clocksarestupid has run some tests, and the “surprising” results are that apparently the Air doesn’t love serving up the HD. In their tests, the ultra slim laptop was able to play 720P video on its own 13-inch screen, but when connected to an external HD set, frame rates dropped... Read More
No FireWire on the MacBook Air unfortunately means no Target Disc mode
I was reading an interesting post over at Apple Matters detailing Gregory Ng‘s recent trouble diagnosing a hardware issue he was having on his new MacBook Air. The main problems he was having revolved around the Air’s lack of multiple USB ports, and Ng paints a funny picture of his dealings with an Apple support rep. But Ng’s USB problem got me to thinking of another potential trouble-shooting roadblock that the MacBook Air’s lack of ports might cause... Read More
MacBook Air already having problems?
Mac Complainer is already (you guessed it) complaining about the MacBook Air. It seems some early adopters are experiencing some problems with the ultra slim notebook, including “unstable iSights”, interference with 2.4 GHz routers, and overheating issues, which apparently cause the Air to shut down a core and decrease clock speed to compensate. Additionally, it appears the headphone jack is recessed, meaning not every pair of head phones is going to fit (something... Read More
Sure, the MacBook Air looks great, but how does it taste?
(iPhone users click here to watch the video) It took all 4 Today Show regulars to properly gush over the MacBook Air, but only one, Meredith Viera, chose to lick it. Good thing they kept it away from Al – no telling what would have happened. Read More
Newflash: Steve Jobs “brilliant”, “trim”, and “not very nice”
We’ve been on a video kick lately here at Macenstein, and while this video isn’t overly new, (in fact, it dates back to October) I found it somewhat fascinating for couple reasons. (iPhone users click here to watch the video) First, it provides a rare and very candid account of a person’s meeting with Steve Jobs. It seems like for every Violet Blue “Macworld brush-off story” you hear, there’s another Larry Tesler ‘When I wasn’t... Read More
MacBook Air feature set destroys the competition
Thanks to faithful Macenstein reader TheCos who came across this awesome pic that ought to shut up all those MacBook Air bashers out there. Clearly the Air has the leg up on the competition when it comes to features. [Original Image] Read More
MacBook Air holds 2 spots in Amazon’s Top 10
Well, it’s not even shipping yet, but the MacBook Air (pre-order) is currently holding the #3 and #10 spot on Amazon’s Top 10 Notebooks List list, and it has charted as high as #2 and #4 throughout the morning. (Apple actually has 6 of the top 10 laptops on Amazon right now). We’re not sure how great a indicator Amazon’s notebook list is in predicting total sales, but a Top 10 list is something even idiots like us can understand – higher is better.... Read More
Video: The MacBook Air…Why the hell not?
Apple will sell at least 3 MacBook Air’s in Japan
We have no idea what they’re saying, but it appears from their inflections that these 3 Japanese morning show hosts are fairly impressed with the MacBook Air. Of course, maybe they are laughing at its price and lack of ports… it’s hard to tell. But one thing comes through loud and clear; they seem to like that it is thin and shiny, two highly favorable attributes in Japanese gadgets. Perhaps the Air will lead Apple’s invasion of Japan in 2008. Read More
