New MacBooks/Pros on the 19th?
Pretty much every Tuesday since Macworld, the rumor community has wondered if this would be “THE” Tuesday, the one where we’ll finally see new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Well, while it is a far cry from a smoking gun, there is now at least a little more evidence than usual that next Tuesday might be THE Tuesday. Switch To A Mac notes that Amazon, long-time Apple partner/ruiner of Apple’s surprises, has a series of new MacBook Pro rebates out this week that... Read More
Poll: How many charge cycles does your battery have?
My “new” Macbook is my first laptop in about 10 years, so I’m not overly familiar with how long these new-fangled rechargeable jobbers can potentially last. So out of curiosity, I thought I would take a poll of our readership to see how many charge cycles their current Mac Laptop battery is running on. To test this, I am using the excellent (free) iStat Pro widget by iSlayer. I bought my MacBook on November 3rd, and as you can see, it currently has 76 charges,... Read More
Multi-touch trackpads a simple software update for current Mac laptops?
[UPDATE: T3 seems to have removed their post, for whatever reason (see below in the comments)] T3 is reporting that the multi-touch trackpad featured in the MacBook Air, and presumably one of the new features in the soon-to-be-released MacBook Pros, is not hardware-based, but rather a simple software hack that could in theory be made available to current MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. That is, if Apple allows it. Read More Read More
Video: Is this how the MacBook’s multi-touch track pad will work?
Elantech demoed their new multi-touch laptop trackpad this week at CES, and it seems to function quite a bit like the much-rumored multi-touch MacBook’s trackpad is supposed to. Although Elantech’s pad is much smaller than the one many Apple fanboys have mocked-up, functionally, it behaves very similarly to the iPhone – with pinch zoom in/out movements. One cool new feature is a full rotate, accomplished using 2 hands. While the wide track pad in the Apple... Read More

Review: Speck’s SeeThru Hard Shell for MacBook
Above: Apples and “oranges”. (Get it? My Apple is orange? Never mind). I’m fairly anal about keeping my stuff in pristine working order. I’m the guy who has all 2000 of his CDs alphabetized on his shelves, who always puts DVDs and video games back in their cases, never leaving them piled upside down to be put away “when I get around to it”. I’m also the kind of guy who puts a case on almost anything; my cel phone, my iPod, my iPhone,... Read More
All hail the nanotech battery! 22 hours of MacBook battery life; 400 hours of iPod use, 2500 hours of iPhone standby time!
Imagine… what if you could watch 70 hours of iPod video on a single charge. (OK, wait, that actually, might be a bad thing). Instead, imagine something more useful, like getting 22+ hours of MacBook use. Or 2500 hours of iPhone standby time. Such is the promise of Stanford University researchers who claim to have found a way to use silicon nanowires to improve the way lithium-ion batteries store energy, delivering a reported 10x boost in capacity. Gotta love our faithful readers!
Faithful Macenstein reader Jerrett writes: Greetings Doc- I was having a Mac party tonight, really I was just simultaneously upgrading macs to Leopard and installing software. I Apple tech on the side for extra cash, and my uncle just happens to be a re-seller so it works out for both of us. Anyways, I realized I had 6 Macs in the room at one time and decided to snap a photo for you. Can you spot which one of these machines is an abomination of Apple? I actually have 9 macs,... Read More
MacBook/MacBook Pro software update 1.1 fixes freezing issue
From Software update: “This update addresses a responsiveness issue on MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers. Some MacBook and MacBook Pro systems may occasionally experience a temporary suspension of keyboard input which can last a minute or longer. The Mac OS X 10.5.1 update is required before installing the MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1.” I’ve experienced this freeze on my MacBook in the past, but it was a random problem I am unable to reproduce... My new MacBook is my first laptop in years, having spent the last decade or so of my computing life tethered to desktop machines. And while I appreciate the newfound mobility the Macbook offers, a good 80% of my laptop computing is still done at my desk. Using the MacBook’s built-in keyboard and trackpad for 9-10 hours a day just isn’t an option for me (or my wrists). Ergonomically, I am just having a hard time adjusting to a full day’s work on a laptop.... Read More
