Stop Scrabble cheaters in their tracks with CheckWord
We’ve all been there, winning by a close margin in the heat of a Scrabble game when suddenly some little, yellow, spikey haired punk tries to convince us that Quijbo (A fat, balding, North American ape with no chin) is a word. Well, Faithful Macenstein reader Quinton (who sounds awfully close to “Quijibo”, if you ask me) says that the new iPhone/touch app CheckWord is a Scrabble player’s dream app (and here I’d have thought it was Scrabble). CheckWord... Read More
iPhone’s dont kill people. Doogie Howser with an iPhone kills people
Say it ain’t so! The iPhone used for evil?!? Yup. Faithful Macenstein reader Scott let us know that the iPhone makes its debut as an instrument of evil wielded by none other than Neil Patrick Harris, who stars in Joss Whedon’s new mini-musical thingy, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Above: Dr. Horrible has created a pretty sweet iPhone app for remotely controlling vans with which to wreck mayhem. It’s not yet available in the App store yet though, I... Read More
NOKIA e65 FOREVER!!! (or until a 32GB iPhone comes out)
Faithful Macenstein reader Matthew writes: Hey, following on from your post about iPhone apps, check out the apps I have on my phone: NOKIA e65 FOREVER*!!! *note that by forever I mean until there is a 32gb iPhone. I hear you, Matthew. While I don’t personally own that piece of crap phone (I am the proud owner of a Shrek-green Gen 1 iPhone) I too will not be upgrading to the latest model until it has at least 32GB of memory in it. 1 week in, what iPhone Apps made your cut
Well, today marks the unofficial 1-week anniversary of the iTunes App store, and the iPhone 2.0 leaked firmware. So, after a week of playing with the various applications out there, what apps have you decided you can’t live without on your iPhone/iPod touch, and what apps have you ditched? Here’s what my current iPhone looks like. Apps I have tried and gotten rid of include : Disney All Star cards, Steps, Bubble Wrap, Sim Stapler, All the free Jirbo Stuff, 105... Read More

If you have an iPhone, you need “More Cowbell!”
Obviously PhoneSaber is the number one reason most people will be buying an iPhone this summer, but coming in a close second is the newly released More Cowbell! by Glenda Adams. This brilliant app is a wonderful tribute to the infamous Christopher Walken SNL skit of the same name, and even features a sample of Walken’s infamous “I gotta have more cowbell!” (I’m sure Adams went through the proper channels to secure the rights to Walken’s voice, but... Oh, the mental anguish of deleting the crappy iPhone Apps you paid for!
By far the biggest drawback to the iTunes App Store (from a consumer’s point of view) is that currently there are no trial versions of any applications available. If you think an application sounds interesting, you are left to trust in the app’s description (written by the developer) a couple screen shots (again, usually the best-looking ones, chosen by the developer), and the comments/ratings (if any) of those customers who were brave enough to buy the application... The iPhone “stowaway” playlist glitch
Hey kids, here’s something fun to try! Connect your iPhone to iTunes, and then hit the little arrow that shows you what your iPhone thinks you have synced. On mine, despite only having 4 playlists set to sync in iTunes, the iPhone thinks I have 17 playlists on it. Above: I only have 4 playlists checked to sync, yet the iPhone is showing me 17 in iTunes. When I actually open the “iPod” app on the iPhone and check my playlists, I see that it has put 9 playlists... Read More
Review: Run, don’t walk, AWAY from “Steps”
One of the coolest things about the iPhone’s applications is their ability to tap into the iPhone’s accelerometer. Based on my experiences playing some of the iPhone’s accelerometer-based games, (such as the ultra-sensitive Super Monkey Ball) it seemed perfectly logical to me that the iPhone could be used as a pedometer. And maybe it can, but Steps, the first such iPhone pedometer application available on iTunes, isn’t the answer. I love the idea of... Read More
Mo’ Apps, Mo’ Problems. Whose iPhone 2.0 migration has gone smoothly?
Not mine, I’ll tell you that much. While I love the iPhone, and the Apps, I do not love the “rickety” feeling my gen 1 iPhone has now, as if I must handle it with kid gloves or risk crashing it. Not that it matters, kid gloves or not, it crashes. And don’t get me started on those hour-long syncs… Mo’ Apps, Mo’ Problems At first the migration seemed to go well. I upgraded my firmware Friday morning, downloaded/bought a few apps, played... Read More
