Pic: Leopard’s blurry Preview

Not to get all down on Leopard here, but in addition to the 2 recent reader-submitted Leopard gripes, (see Aperture problem and Mail issue), I thought I might throw my own issue with Leopard into the mix. Last night I was going through some photos in Preview on my new Leopard-equipped MacBook, and I noticed that everything looked just a bit softer than usual. Preview had never been the “sharpest” tool in the shed under past OS X’s, but Leopard’s Preview... Read More

Seeing double in Mail

Faithful Macenstein reader Brian, inspired by our recent “double your fun” Aperture glitch wrote in with his own weird Leopard issue, this time a problem with Mail 3. I saw the post about the Aperture/Desktop glitch and the double up of the Aperture Library reminded me of a glitch I’ve had in Mail 3 in Leopard. When I imported archived mailboxes from my Tiger backup into Leopard Mail after a clean install I got two of everything. If I deleted one mailbox both... Read More

Leopard’s weird Aperture/desktop glitch

Faithful Macenstein reader Logan Williams has alerted us to an odd problem Aperture users might be experiencing when they upgade to Leopard. “I found a bug in Leopard, as have several others. It’s really annoying. If you have Aperture, you can’t set a folder in System Prefs for desktop backgrounds – it duplicates your Aperture projects folder and starts acting strange. When you press the disclosure triangle for the duplicate, the original unfolds and it... Read More

“Check out DockAppsMenu, because Stacks suck”

Stacks is an interesting yet baffling new feature of the new Leopard. Basically, using Stacks you can quickly display the top 13 or so files (listed alphabetically) in a folder in either a hard-to-read fan-like sweep, or as a giant hard-to-read grid (again, only displaying as many icons as will fit). This is great for small folders of incredibly organized content, but lame if you want to navigate something like the Applications Folder from the dock – something we loved... Read More

Bring Leopard back to the 1700’s with a Wooden Dock

The Leopard beta has been out so long that many people were sick of the new 3D dock before they even got a chance to use it. Well, luckily there are no shortages of Dock hacks floating around to let you spice up the bottom (or side, if you’re into that) of your screen. These latest two don’t get rid of Leopard’s 3D-ness, but they are sure to provide seconds of fun when your friends see them. Todd Baur’s “Sky” and “Wood” themes... Read More

Leopard fixes iCal’s icon

I’ve been running Leopard now for about 5 days, and until just now I really couldn’t come up with a good reason to recommend anyone rush out to upgrade to the latest OS. However, thanks to faithful Macenstein reader Bilbo, I feel confident Leopard is worth all of its 12,900 cents. Why? Well, notice anything different about this picture? That’s right! Bilbo pointed us to a posting over at as 2sentencesorless.com where they were astute enough to notice that Apple... Read More

Using Disk Warrior to repair flaky Leopard Installations

Faithful Macenstein reader Jon writes of with his recent experience in running Disk Warrior to help fix his upity Leopard install. Good morning! I upgraded to Leopard yesterday on two systems and have some information that might be useful to someone else. After upgrading my iMac, it acted “flaky.” Some System Preferences would hang as would other things. Before reverting to a backup, I ran DiskWarrior on it. It found a whole slew of inconsistencies introduced by the... Read More

WOW. Apple Sells Two Million Copies of Mac OS X Leopard in First Weekend

Who even knew there were 2 million Leopard compatible Macs out there?! 🙂 Taken from the official Apple Press release: Apple today announced that it sold (or delivered in the case of maintenance agreements) over two million copies of Mac OS X Leopard since its release on Friday, far outpacing the first-weekend sales of Mac OS X Tiger, which was previously the most successful OS release in Apple’s history.
