OS X - Macenstein - Page 4

Flashback: “This thing called the Dock” – Steve Jobs demos NeXT, bashes the Mac, says his favorite font is “Stencil”? WTF?

Ok, this little piece of Apple history is over 30 minutes long, but I encourage anyone who considers themselves an Apple geek to watch it. It is a demo by Steve Jobs of “NeXTSTEP Release 3” given in 1992, and it provides a slew of interesting tidbits about the newly married Steve Jobs, NeXTSTEP, OS X, and 1992 in general. If you don’t have 30 minutes to spare, some key highlights that stuck out in my mind are: – 1st up, you just know Steve wishes he... Read More

The most bad-ass use of Time Machine yet

Faithful Macenstein reader Mike Solomon over at The Cleverist has has found a pretty bad-ass way to use Time Machine, and I suggest Apple use Mike in an upcoming Time Machine commercial – that is, if they think they can tame this wild renegade! “This weekend I needed to edit some video in a pinch. The project was going to take about 20 gigs of hard drive space but I was away from my external hard drive and only had about 10 gigs of free space on my laptop. So what... Read More

Turns out the latest “Mac security hole” does Windows

You play with FireWire, you’re gonna get burned… Remember that “critical” Mac OS security exploit we told you about last week? Well as it turns out, it isn’t just a problem for the Mac. Windows XP is apparently vulnerable as well, and Windows users may actually have more to worry about than we Mac geeks. Read More  Read More

Apple set to release OS X 10.4.12

Anyone still care about OS X 10.4 anymore? Well, if the answer was “yes”, put down that bottle of “New Coke”, turn off that episode of Max Headroom, and take a listen to this, grandpa! We have it on good authority (meaning this is a rumor, and “good authority” could mean anything) that Apple is ready to drop its final update to yesterday’s OS, aka “Tiger”. That’s right. 10.4.12 is allegedly ready to roll, and will... Read More

The real reason to upgrade to Leopard

I’m totally giving Leopard’s iChat the big “Thumbs Up“. Why? Just cause I can. Thank god they kept the always useful “money mouth“.  Read More

Apple says new OS X security exploit not a big deal: discoverers decide to make it a big deal

In, Security glitch exposes OS X account passwords, News.com reports on a newly discovered vulnerability in the way OS X stores username and password info during the login process. The exploit was discovered by the appropriately named Jacob Appelbaum, a San Francisco-area programmer who dropped this “bomb” on Apple February 5th: “This is a real problem and it needs to be fixed,” said … Appelbaum. He said he disagreed with the company’s [Apple’s]... Read More

Mac OS X: The William Hung of desktop OS’s

OS X has long been applauded for its beautiful GUI, but little has been made of the audio experience that accompanies OS X’s visuals. Perhaps this is because year after year, as each new version of OS X comes out, the visuals receive countless tweaks – some small, some major – while the audio has remained unchanged. The 14 default sounds you’ll find in Leopard are pretty much the 14 sounds you found in Cheetah. In fact, more than half of them are carryovers... Read More

Apple releases Leopard Graphics Update

Apple has released a 48.6 MB graphics update for Leopard. I guess Apple didn’t want to hit the 400MB mark with its 10.5.2 update. It seems to only show up in Software Update once you have downloaded the 10.5.2 update, but the stand alone installer is here. Leopard Graphics Update is recommended for all users and improves the stability and compatibility of your Mac. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2.  Read More

Bring Stacks home: The Prove Shelves by Creosa

Faithful Macenstein reader Jim came across these crazy newfangled shelves on freshome that bear a striking resemblance to Leopard’s Stacks. While ordinary bookshelves can only mimic Leopard’s Stacks feature’s “grid view”, the Prove Shelves, designed by the German company Creosa, do a very respectable job mimicking Leopard’s “fan” layout. Sure, they may not have been designed to look like Stacks, but when you are an Apple fan, you... Read More
